So I decided to go to experience the greyness that is NY on the weekend where DC got really nice weather and visit my old pal Jamie from home. Jamie, for those of you unfamiliar, is one of my good friends from high school and uni. She went on exchange to UPenn and decided that she loved the US so much that she had to stay and now she's living in Willyburg, Brooklyn which was where I stayed for the weekend.
This was the first kinda touristy thing I saw - the Manhattan Bridge. The dodgy Chinatown bus, after leaving a guy behind at a reststop even though all his stuff was still on board, dropped us off at Canal St in Chinatown where I was greeted with chaos and people peddling fake everything. It's seriously the worst introduction to NYC for a tourist.

I finally managed to find the correct subway line and made it to Chelsea to meet up with Jamie and Anthony (who I know via a convoluted way which I shan't share this time round) to go touring around some of Chelsea's little art galleries. In the Chelsea Art Gallery, we got to ride teacups with rubber babies that had no eyes and Jamie broke one.

Then we sauntered around for a bit more and decided that we couldn't take Chelsea's pretentiousness anymore and decided to to East Village to get some chow and meet up with Felix who is a friend of Jamie's also from Melbourne. We also decided to go see some art there and found this picture of a frontal wedgie. Ouch.]

The next day, after having a little Melbourne breakfast party in a Diner uptown with other Melbournians we knew in NYC, we went and frolicked in Central Park on the way to the gallery in Spanish Harlem.

It looks like England. So much for trying to get away from the mother country...

We also went to see the Studio Museum in Harlem. The trip itself was very interesting...we walked by the Apollo Theatre where James Brown lay in honor after his death.

After Spanish Harlem, we went to the Bronx to see the Brazilian Tropicalia exhibit there which was way cool, and also saw Yankee Stadium.

That night we decided to rent a DVD and we saw a selection of Aussie classic flix...in the Foreign English Language section...mmmhm.

So I wasn't all that touristy in NY as I really just trailed Anthony on his pilgrimage of NY art galleries, but it was a good trip. I really like Williamsburg in Brooklyn too - full of hipsters. It was like you had to have a goatee and skinny jeans to join the club.
